From the Beginning by Dino
Let's have Dean's story which marks the inception of Fitness Junction and mentions a few of our treasured clients who had a great impact on his career path :)
"I grew up in Newcastle. I studied the HSC at Kotara High School and it was my PE teacher Martin Reilly who inspired me to become a teacher.
After gaining acceptance into university in 1987 I deferred for a couple of years and worked at Esso New Lambton for the legendary Zol Mahoric. One of the jobs that Zol had me do was clean the workshop floor with a toothbrush and a cake of soap!
When I officially started university in 1989 I gained employment at the infamous Howzat Gym in Darby St. My list of duties included fitness testing, resistance programming and prancing around in my parachute material tracksuit. I worked at Howzat for the duration of my degree and it was during this time I started to consider a career in the fitness industry. It was also during this time that I met Jenny Gore (or the professor as she is affectionately known at FJ) as she was my thesis and 4th year practicum supervisor. The professor saved my arse at university on numerous occasions by getting me moving on assignments, she also motivated me to actually want to have a crack at teaching PE when I graduated.
So when I graduated with a Bachelor of Education/Physical Education degree in 1992 I moved down to Sydney and started a brief career as a PE teacher at Granville Boys High in 1993. Coming from Newcastle I wasn’t quite prepared for the ethnic diversity at the school (85% of students were Lebanese or Turkish muslims) so it took awhile before I really started to feel comfortable on the PE oval or in the classroom. I stuck the job out for 18 months but at the same time I was doing afternoon shifts at gyms from Petersham to North Sydney. My love for the fitness industry was too strong so I resigned from The Dept of Education and bought a oneway ticket to London.
I arrived in London in 1995 and hit the ground running. I quickly found myself working at Holmes Place Gym on the Fulham Rd Chelsea, right across the road from Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant Aubergine. Gordon was a regular at the gym as was Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia, Mickey Rourke and Jon Bon Jovi (yes you’ve all been bored to tears with my Bon Jovi stories). I worked at Holmes Place for 3 years and after a chance meeting with Arnold Schwarzenegger (yes more gratuitous name dropping) I decided to move back to Newcastle and open my own personalised gym.
Opening a gym takes money though, and I didn’t have any, so I took a teaching position at the TAFE in 1998 lecturing to students studying for the Certificate 4 in Fitness. I also did some personal training with a little known band called Silverchair and continued to train with the boys until there indefinite hiatus.
So on the 1st of May 1999 Fitness Junction was born (naming rights go to Janet Carr JC) and the rest is history. Bring on the next 20 years!!"
Always the most entertaining, bright and funny fella. Perhaps rubbing shoulders with so many performers is what made him that way or perhaps it was, in fact, the other way around.
